REAL WORLD RESULTS!
If you've tried finding a real, professional, paying job in the Audio industry, you know it can be tough.  Perhaps you've only tried the traditional recording studio route?  You know the routine you apply like crazy to a ton of studios, if you're really lucky, one of them lets you work for them FOR FREE as an intern.  Eventually you might work your way up to a low-paying, part-time position dubbing CDs.  Eventually, after years of struggle, you might end up being an Audio Pro.  THIS IS NOT YOUR ONLY OPTION!  There are many, many paying, full-time jobs available RIGHT NOW in the Audio Industry, IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK!  There are so many options for employment in the Audio field, and many of them are little known, or are often overlooked by those seeking employment.  There are even jobs that offer free housing, and some that offer free world travel!!  There are so many possibilities, if you know where to look!

I'm not an author by trade, I'm a working Audio professional.  The Audio job-hunting resources I've included in this eBook are the same resources I've successfully used to gain professional employment in the Audio industry!!  This is not theoretical information! I have used many of these resources myself, in the real world.  If I found employment using these resources, so can you.  Using the resources in this eBook, I've obtained Audio employment that provided me with free travel to Hawaii, Alaska, Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Bahamas, and more!  One employer provided me with a free room in a beach house on an island off the coast of Florida!  Some employers provided me access to equipment I could never afford on my own.  The possibilities are great and varied, if you know where to look!

HERE ARE TWO FREE SAMPLES OF JOB RESOURCE LINKS FROM THE BOOK:

BackstageJobs.com: http://backstagejobs.com/jobs.htm
This is an excellent Theatre/Dance tech employment website, and the best part is that it's totally FREE (it's actually owned and operated by a theatre technician!).  There are many listings in various categories.  My only criticism of this site is that there are sometimes lags between updates.  Be sure to check out the "Last Minute Listings" section for available jobs that need to be filled ASAP.

My Entertainment World: http://www.myentertainmentworld.com/
This free website lists jobs in many categories, including theatre.  It contains many international job listings.  Under Upcoming Employment Opportunities, click on Theatre.

WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOT
This book is not an instructional manual teaching audio production skills.  There are no chapters about equalization, MIDI sequencing, or the Fletcher-Munson Effect.  This eBook will not advance your audio technical skills in the least.  When reading this book, it is assumed that you (or the person for whom you're job-searching) already have at least some existing technical skills in the area of live or recorded audio production (a lot of skills would be best, but some will do!).  The sole purpose of this eBook is to HELP YOU FIND EMPLOYMENT that utilizes your audio and/or music production skills, period.

To be clear, you do need technical skills in the field of Audio to find employment in that field.  The amount of skills you need can vary greatly.  Having a degree from a university, college, or audio technical school can only help your employment prospects (and hopefully you learned some audio skills too), but the truth is that there are many people working full-time in the field of Audio today who have no secondary education, and a few I know didn't even finish high school.  Audio is very much a business of what you know, and what you can do...  formal credentials are viewed as a positive indicator of what you might know, but are often not viewed as a requirement.  There are definitely some jobs in Audio that require specific academic credentials (and the trend towards this is increasing over time), but currently the majority of available employment is open to anyone who has the technical skills do the job (regardless of how those skills were learned).  This eBook will help you find those employment opportunities!

WHY AN eBOOK?
There are many reasons I chose to write this information as an eBook, as opposed to a traditional paper book.  Honestly, an eBook is easier to produce (it requires the same amount of work in it's writing, but the production of the final product is more simple), is easier to distribute, and takes less of a time commitment---as I mentioned before, I'm not an author by trade, I'm an Audio professional.  The biggest advantage of the eBook format, however, is the ability to include internet links within the text.  The internet is an amazingly powerful job-hunting tool.  While the internet is not the only source of job-hunting presented in my eBook, it is the primary one.  Jobs in Audio often open up quickly, and are often filled just as quickly.  Next to calling every potential employer of Audio personnel in the world---every day, multiple times a day--------to see if any openings have occurred, the internet is the number one way to stay up-to-the-minute on what jobs are available.  It is quite easy to print out this book, and read it on paper....  However, if you read it on a computer (linked to the internet), instead of typing in tons of URL internet addresses from a paper book, you can simply click on the links provided, and your software should take you almost instantly to those sites!  This feature is the true power of this eBook.  You can read about a useful job site, click on it, check it out, bookmark it if you like it, then return to reading the eBook, or start applying for jobs immediately (via email).  Try doing that with a paperback!

MUCH MORE THAN JUST A COLLECTION OF LINKS!
Audio Employment – Beyond The Studio is much more than just a collection of web links.  I've taken the areas of Audio employment in each chapter, and have included details about the specific jobs available within that category.  I've included information about the technical skills required to obtain the jobs, and other details related to each position.  I have personally held jobs in several of the categories in the book, and I have given my insights as an insider to help you make the most of the resources I've provided.

Here is a sample of one job description (of three) from the Cruise Ship chapter:

AUDIO POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN THE CRUISE SHIP INDUSTRY:
There are three primary kinds of Audio employment available on cruise ships:  (these vary depending upon the size of each ship)

1) Audio Engineer / Sound Technician / Sound Engineer: This person's primary responsibility is usually the live mixing of the nightly entertainment in the show lounges/theatres.  Most ships have a troupe of singer/dancers who live on board, and put on a few different Vegas-style song-and-dance shows.  These shows usually involve tracked music, and often live musicians as well.  Most lead vocals are sung live, and some backing vocals are live, but many are tracked.  These backing tracks often play off of multitrack digital tape (Tascam DA88 being a favorite format for ships).  The Audio Engineer must be able to mix the backing tracks, live musicians, and multiple wireless microphones (FOH and monitors) simultaneously.  The shows are fast-paced, with different performers entering/leaving stage quickly, so keeping the right mics on and off at the right times (while keeping everything balanced) can be a challenge.  You must have experience, or at least an understanding, of "click tracks", and how to route them from anywhere to anywhere.  You must be experienced in live sound to be an Audio Engineer on a ship.  You will be quickly thrown into a live mixing situation, with a live audience.  The cruise lines often like to hire Audio Engineers who have experience in the field of musical theatre (especially those with experience mixing large cast musicals), theme parks, or resorts/casinos.  A degree or certification from a university or tech school is also helpful.  [If you have less experience and skills than required an Audio Engineer position, you may want to jump down to the "Lounge Tech" description below.

In addition to the regular performers, there is a constant stream of guest entertainers who come on board for a show, a week, a month, or whatever period of time suits the cruise line.  On ships I've mixed magicians (http://www.larryandraven.com), jugglers, ventriloquists, lounge singers, solo guitarists, bands, "The World's Fastest Banjo Player", and many more (we won't discuss the dreaded Passenger "Talent" Shows).  You never know who or what is coming next, and you must be able to accommodate everyone's audio needs.

Your schedule typically starts with an early afternoon rehearsal for that night's show (whatever it might be).  After that, there are sometimes afternoon events that may need some audio support.  After dinner, Audio Engineers usually head to the main show lounge/theatre, and stay there (mixing live shows) until around midnight.  Usually shows run twice per night, seven nights a week.  On many cruise lines, you do not get "days off".  There will be time off, but usually not complete days/nights.

In addition to your Audio duties, you will also be required (like everyone on the crew) to participate in safety training/drills.  This takes the form of small classes, the watching of cheesy videos, and sometimes the true learning of rescue skills (I'm actually now certified in Water Rescue Crafts in the Rebublic of the Bahamas!).  There is also a military-style pecking-order to ships, especially regarding safety and drills.  There are officers, and you will answer to them.  You will also have a rank, usually a pretty decent one.  Sometimes you're even considered officer-level.  In short, if you have major problems with authority, or following rules, cruise ships probably aren't for you.

The Audio Engineer/Sound Tech position is usually the highest level Audio position on a ship.  It usually also pays the most, compared to the other Audio positions.  In fact, the Audio Engineer can actually get paid more than some on-stage performer positions.  The nightly entertainment is important to the cruise lines, so great emphasis is placed on having someone keep it running smoothly. The need for Audio Engineers on ships is high, so opportunities abound.
